Ubuntu Considers Taking It Easier On Software Updates Over Weekends

Phoronix: Ubuntu Considers Taking It Easier On Software Updates Over Weekends

Ubuntu developers are looking at extending their policy of not releasing stable release updates (SRUs) around the weekend as well as not phasing them up to 100% during those weekend times either...

I guess we're blowing right past the part where people can choose to not install things the instant the notification appears.

I used Ubuntu for years and it was rare to have problems with updates, now I don't use Ubuntu anymore but I have some friends who I installed it for and often call me because something doesn't work.
It seems to me that apt is overrated!
There is always some problem, even without third-party repositories, I don't know if it is a problem specific to Ubuntu with apt, or if apt itself has become problematic.
But I have been using Tumbleweed (zypper) for years without external repositories and I have never had a single problem.
It is slower, but at least it works and if you have a conflict it asks you how to solve it by giving you solutions.
The solutions that apt provides are always apt install --fix-broken or sudo dpkg -i … which usually don't work.

I would like to see Canonical update the Software Updater from GTK 3 to GTK 4.

That was my first thought, but I like weekend updates. I can either take them on Friday, look for issues on Saturday, and be ready to roll out on Monday or have the option of deferring that process until Monday and ending Wednesday.

Moreover, not everybody is off on the weekend nor is everyone's religion some variation of the Jewish God to require them to be off on Saturday or Sunday.

woddy Every distribution update going bad during the latter half of the 2000s is why I don't use Ubuntu. Every .04 to .10 to .04 to .10 would end up having some kind of issue and I found it easier to just backup my user data and reinstall the OS than I did to actually figure out the problems.

My bet, the problem is that they don't use apt but snap.

This is mostly for server usage's benefit with unattended upgrades.

No, it was a system update issue, not snaps.

This seems like busywork to me, something to make it look like what they do matters but in reality no one really cares about.
