Ikey Doherty's Serpent OS Linux Distribution Goes Into Alpha

Phoronix: Ikey Doherty's Serpent OS Linux Distribution Goes Into Alpha

It's been a few months since hearing anything new out of Serpent OS, the original Linux distribution led by Ikey Doherty, who started Solus Linux and also was involved with Intel's Clear Linux. As a Christmas surprise, Serpent OS has now reached the alpha stage of development...

What is the size of the pool of distribution contributors and how does one get a sufficient number of them to care about your new distribution?

What does "stateless" mean in this context?

Feels like steam is one of the main reasons why we still drag 32bit dependencies along on peoples 64bit systems. It gets especially annoying if you wanna run steam on riscv as those are pure 64bit systems without a 32bit mode. Box64 now contains a 32bit emulator to handle that called box32(not to be confused with box86 which handles 32bit x86 on 32bit ARM).

That can eventually be fixed with WINE's WoW64 mode, but it will take some time until Steam starts using that and drops old Proton versions depending on 32 bit libraries.

And steam shows that 64bit is an overkill and a waste.
Games are more complex and resource intensive and yet, they do fine on 32bit ...

My ideal desktop would be 64bit kernel + x32 userspace.

Intel 4004 is enough, anything newer is overkill and wasteful.

That packages come with sane, vendor-supplied default configurations that work ootb and are stored in a suitable place under /usr/share/defaults (like in clear linux, where Ikey pioneered the concept).

Packages are also expected to be patched to look for defaults under /usr/share/defaults first. This is aligned with the so-called hermetic-usr initiative.

The end goal is that all vendor-supplied configurations live under /usr, such that /etc/ can potentially be deleted to "reset" the system to its factory state.

As a way of enforcing this ethos, the moss package manager does not allow packages to contain files in /etc/.

Our approach is to focus on good tooling process and package delivery experience (DX and UX) , with a side of pleasant ootb defaults on the OS side, using an approach that feels more flexible in practice than the approach offered by image-based distributions (yes, we run those for comparison).

Sure if it fits the purpose.

The 4004 can hold 1/270781 of the King James bible in memory

                    32bits can hold almost a 1000 bibles

                    64bits can 4257753843551

Usually 1 bible is enough ...
