Phoronix: Ubuntu 25.04 Begins Preparations For GIMP 3.0

With GIMP 3.0-RC1 out for testing since earlier this month, the hope is that GIMP 3.0 stable will in fact ship in time for the release of Ubuntu 25.04 next April. The current GIMP 3.0 release candidate is working its way to Debian Unstable and in turn soon should be available via the Ubuntu 25.04 archive...

Considering the existence of Flatpaks, as noted at the end of the article, is it even important to include it as part of the Ubuntu/Debian release?

Well presumably they'd do it as a snap...

Flatpacks are a lot slower to start up than debs, and GIMP is heavy software, so yes.

GIMP wouldnt take much longer to startup via flatpak than other apps. GIMP also isn't really heavy software until you load something up which is well after it opens.

Not from you, but the time to open flatpaks are also a bit exaggerated. Sure it's noticeably slower but it means that someone doesn't have to maintain it in ubuntu/debian/rhel/fedora/opensuse/arch/all the shitty arch clones/anywhere else. You package it once and it runs everywhere. Maintenance doesn't come for free and so having One Build is a massive benefit to the ecosystem which allows distributions to focus on other things like core packages and DEs etc. Having 20000 forms of a single package is not a good thing when it comes at a cost.

I have a feeling gimp 3.0 isn't coming out in 2025. Haven't they been on 2.8.x since the middle ages?

This depends on how many shared libraries are already preloaded. If you run Gnome and GTK3 apps startup is indeed a lot faster with native Gimp. If flatpak is a thing you would in that case need to reload the entirety of the GTK stack.

If you use KDE or any other DE that is not based on GTK, however...

I know that you have a lot in your plate Michael, but maybe do a quick benchmark between Flatpack, Snap and Deb releases?

Just the start up, so the debate can be cleared.

Yes, I'm already using an OS, I don't need to download another one just to use an app.

Too bad HexChat is no longer maintained so still stuck on GTK 2, and also Ubuntu's theme Yaru also have GTK 2 as a dependency.
I think Ubuntu should drop GTK 2 as a dependency and not install it by default.
