Phoronix: AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 Now Available For Testing, Derived From CentOS Stream 10

AlmaLinux Kitten 10 has been introduced today as what will be the next iteration of this community-based, RHEL/CentOS-derived enterprise-grade Linux distribution. AlmaLinux Kitten 10 is tracking the CentOS Stream 10 sources for what will eventually become the base of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10...

Wait, Alma Linux is not a RHEL-like distro anymore?

If so, glad I went with Rocky for my server.

The reasons should be made clear and straightforward. But I wouldn't be surprised if it were a tiny part of the new iron curtain descending. Frankly, I'm quite surprised the Internet has been so wide open so far. Then again, there's a lot of people who would love to just ignore the whole political situation and get back to running business as usual. There are profits to be made.

So AlmaLinux is now just a riced CentOS Stream. Seems to have limited usefulness.

I always thought the Scientific Linux community made a rushed choice settling on Alma. I wouldn't be surprised if they do make a jump to RockyLinux in the coming years.

and its precisely the reason I prefer Alma over Rocky. Saying that, I am sticking to Centos Stream and have experiences zero problems with it (admittedly it is small scale - with 4 in production and 2 for testing/development).

I dont need certification, but if I did I would be using RHEL.

If I needed stability, with a longer than 5 year support cycle, I would consider Alma.

Under no conditions would I consider Rocky, from their seedy business practices to seedy marketing. They are simply not a company that should be rewarded for their conduct.

I like how Alma are also doing important value-add work like supporting X86-64-v2. it gives them value beyond a mere cloner.

Of course it is, why would you think any different?

Why? So CIQ can make money on support contracts while Rocky gives back very little to the community?

What change in direction? What the hell are most of the comments here even referring to? This is NOT REPLACING the traditional AlmaLinux offerings.

First, this is not “AlmaLinux Stream.” CentOS Stream is a product of the CentOS community–it’s the ultimate destination of the CentOS community’s work. AlmaLinux OS Kitten is not a product at all, it is meant as a vehicle along the journey of development of the next version of AlmaLinux.

We are using our freedom here to do a bunch of work in preparation for AlmaLinux OS 10
Did people even read the announcement before commenting?

No. This isn't replacing traditional AlmaLinux.

You missed the point of this being based on CentOS Stream and not RHEL. The whole point of Stream is to be a testing ground for EL developers to be able to do things that RHEL doesn't do so they can show if those different things are worth doing or not. That's exactly what Alma is doing here.

Also, one of the guys who wrote the article today is one of the more prominent Fedora developers. There's a good chance that the work that Alma is doing here is to show why RHEL should make these changes before their next EL release. Not only are Fedora developers working with Alma and are on the Alma Committee, Alma is using EL to share back with the EL community like Stream intended.

I don't see what's so about all this.
