System76 today is releasing an alpha build of Pop!_OS 24.04 that is built atop Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and making it very interesting is that it includes the alpha version of their Rust-written COSMIC desktop environment. I've been playing around with this Pop!_OS 24.04 alpha in advance of today's embargo lift and it's been working out quite well...

I am glad this is finally out, atleast in alpha stage. Congrats to System76.

It should stop Cosmic developers from sniping and making snide remards about people developing other desktops as they will have their own thing to focus on.

They get to stand on their own two feet.

Let's remind people: this is an APLHA 1 release (not even in the Beta stage of the development), of course it's not as polished and full-featured as a 10+ years DE.

After 2 years of dev mostly from scratch, this is amazing to see how customizable, stable and smooth it is already.

I trust the team to polish and complete the missing features and core apps. I have no doubts COSMIC will soon become the DE of choice for many.

How is it going, performance wise? Is it good on old PCs, can it replace LxQt?
