Phoronix: Ubuntu 24.10 To See More Polishing, NVIDIA Wayland By Default & New Welcome Wizard

Oliver Smith who is serving as the Interim Engineering Director for the Ubuntu Desktop team at Canonical has shared some roadmap plans around Ubuntu 24.10. With this being the first post-LTS release following last month's Ubuntu 24.04 Long Term Support, they are more free to innovate this cycle and they have a lot of great plans for enhancing the Linux desktop experience...

I hope it will be possible to uninstall XWayland and run a system that relies fully on Wayland without any legacy X leftovers.

I find the Snap store be lacking, there are so many packages that are not available such as Cockpit, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, etc. It seems Canonical has failed to get partners and major developers aboard Snap.

Still looking forward to be able upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04 🤔

Apparently it should have been called 24.05 (or .06) instead...

snap store works with debian but we need to search for package and then choose the deb version, not easy but works, the new app center at least is much faster than gnome ones

Canonical as always bending over for Nvidia!
I wonder if Nvidia at least pays them...

"Another change Canonical engineer is looking at for Ubuntu 24.10 is Wayland by default for NVIDIA graphics. GNOME 47 should be in great shape with its Wayland support and the hope is that the NVIDIA proprietary driver support will be in super shape come October."

Will still take a while, specially if you use wine

Wine on Wayland works pretty fine here.

                  Snippet:
                  Code:
                  cat > wayland.reg << EOF
                  Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
                  [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Drivers]
                  "Graphics"="x11,wayland"
                  EOF

                  wine regedit wayland.reg

If you only specify "wayland" instead of "x11,wayland" it won't even try checking for XWayland

Wait, so flutter actually renders the UI using GTK? Why was I under the impression that it does its own rendering? I'm pretty sure I've read this somewhere.
