They should concentrate on the boot speed of gnome/kde not grub->gdm. Since jaunty grub->gdm is really good, but all these efforts are wasted if gnome needs at more time than grub->gdm.
Typlically in the past the metric was from Grub -> Logged in desktop via GDM auto-login.
Well bootchart only mesures to gdm start, that does not include login time. The reason is that bootchart is stopped at the end of a runlevel itself - so the autologin is not benchmarked.
