Phoronix: Ubuntu Flavors/Spins Will No Longer Be Able To Install Flatpak By Default

While Ubuntu Linux hasn't provided Flatpak support out-of-the-box due to their preference of using their own Snap app packaging/distribution format, Ubuntu flavors/spins have to this point been able to pre-install Flatpak support if they desired. However, for the 23.04 "Lunar Lobster" cycle and moving forward, Ubuntu flavors will no longer be permitted to install Flatpak packages by default...

What a dick move, haven't seen one this salty in ages.
Flavors were always free to include whatever they see fit in their default package selection. Is this Canonical being desperate?

You can still install flatpak its just not there by default. If you are going to use Ubuntu might as well use snap as its what they support, all seems reasonable to me. If you want flatpaks then just go with something like popOS or fedora where they encourage flatpak usage

Either get some forum moderation going on to stop this toxicity from going unaccounted for or delete my forum account. I have some want to donate for a subscription but I can't even browse comments without this crap. I have no interest in a Reddit 2.0.
No - It is a clear sign that Ubuntu (Canonical) is sensing some threat of flatpak. Flatpak is getting used more an more by users.
But somehow Canonical is trying to get rid of it? (Question of interest - Why? - Maybe because it is more used then their snaps?)

That is a valid point. It is not toxic exploiting bold moves which are not welcomed by its userbase. We could do a poll if Ubuntu useres would prefer Snaps over Flatpak. The outcome would be rather clear. So why? then acting against the userbase to push their failed project? We have seen this before with Mir, Amazon Lens etc...

Can't speak of all flavors but at least Ubuntu MATE and Kubuntu included Flatpak by default.

I don't understand why you speak of toxicity and enforcing moderation. That was clearly my opinion on the news that I expressed freely. You can simply move on if you didn't like it.
If anything, calling for moderation on opinions you don't agree with would qualify more as toxicity.

This, otherwise gnome software will look like an synaptic, choose app, choose source (deb, snap, flatpack, etc?). No need to make it like this by default.
            This is ubuntu, not arch

So, basically, canonical forced them to, and not "joint decision"!?

Upstart, Unity, Mir and now Snap… When will Canonical learn?
