Ubuntu Making Progress On The Lenovo ThinkPad X13s Arm Laptop Support

Phoronix: Ubuntu Making Progress On The Lenovo ThinkPad X13s Arm Laptop Support

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13s is one of the most interesting Arm-powered laptops at the moment with this laptop powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 SoC, 13.3-inch 1920 x 1200 display, up to 32GB of RAM, up to 28 hour battery life, and current pricing starting below $1k USD. Upstream Linux support has been progressing around the ThinkPad X13s and it looks like Ubuntu has also been making some strides on easily supporting this Arm laptop...

I mean ok, its nice that it has a 16:10 panel, very nice actually. But seriously, 1200 bucks minimum for that thing? Seriously? Like 700, sure, that would be reasonable, but not nearly double that.

Really interesting machine! The question for Linux though is how is the GPU performance these days? I see it uses the Adreno™ 690 Graphics but cant find to much information on Linux support for that chip.

Excellent news. Now, they just need to make some progress on the price!

I know it's already had substantial price cuts since launch, but it's still too much for a laptop with those specs.

BTW, the CPU has 4x X1 + 4x A78 cores. Not bad, but already getting a little dated. I think phones first launched with these cores toward the end of 2020.

Yeah. $1200 is G14 money (at least in the US), and thats 16:10 too: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...?skuId=6494638

13" laptops are fine for young children and little people.

I would only buy a Linux laptop if it is 15 inches or larger. It would not Ubuntu. Being a seasoned Linux/Unix person. IRIX AND AIX. I would load Slackware 15 on it.

Ubuntu is just way to cozy with M$ for me.

The price is too high for such a laptop , with 1200 bucks we can buy a m2 macbook air , or bunch of Intel based laptops with great linux support.

Why is anyone impressed by the price? Decent thinkpads have been always priced like that. You're basically paying the Thinkpad tax, but also paying the MIL spec/durability part.

DELL's Latitude line has roughly the same pricing with equally crap specs.

I agree that the Thinkpad X13s is overpriced. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 is a year old chip and was not competitive with contemporary Intel, AMD, and Apple chips back when it launched, and certainly isn't today. Also it doesn't support AV1 hardware decode which means battery life when watching AV1 video (which is gaining popularity fast) will suck.
