What about a 30 year old kernel based on a 50 year old computing paradigm running on commodity hardware neither of which are designed to detect and correct memory errors?

Edit to add on a bit of reflection: Neither of which are really designed to honor data integrity is what I'm getting at. Linux is designed to fail silently (for reasons, some good & some bad) and potentially propagate weird states into permanent storage, while commodity hardware dispenses with data integrity assurance systems designed to detect and correct errors in the process/store/display pipeline. Put them together and... we're lucky the system works as well as it does.
