If the game requests unredirect from the compositor but then doesn't handle it properly, it's a bug in the game. Many games don't set _NET_WM_BYPASS_COMPOSITOR at all, in which case some WMs enable unredirect in fullscreen by default (I think Mutter does). If the game then tears with vsync enabled - it's still a buggy game.
