It is a long time. I think the industry is waking up to the fact that many installations are in an appliance-like role, where they will be expected to operate for many years. Heck, we have big banks using ATM machines still running Windows XP. Shifting IT priorities and budgets means many shops are perpetually in crisis mode, tackling the challenges of the day, while pushing major hardware and OS upgrades out. In the 90's and 2000's, it was common to replace Windows machines every 3 years or so, but then the more expensive UNIX and Mainframe equipment only every 7 to 10 years. Linux has steadily eaten away UNIX marketshare, so it stands to reason that many Linux servers are on a much longer support timeline than you might expect.

As a data point, my employer bought PA-RISC/HP-UX machines in 1999. They replaced them 9 years later, in 2008 with Itanium/HP-UX servers. Then after another 9 years, the Itanium/HP-UX equipment was replaced in 2017 with AMD64/RHEL servers.

If you are a troll, you should do better than this. For example: "Red pill! Micro$$$$$oft forces Ubuntu to upload all your data to Google Cloud which discloses them to the NSA and uses them to rig elections that Trump wins BY A LOT!!!"
