Phoronix: Canonical Talks Up Why Ubuntu Is A Great Replacement To CentOS

Following the surprise announcement last year that CentOS 8 will be EOL'ed at the end of 2021 to focus instead on CentOS Stream and all the uncertainty that brought with Red Hat now being owned by IBM, new distributions like Rocky Linux were conceived while existing Linux distributions have been looking to capitalize on that move. Oracle Linux has been advertising how it's a great RHEL downstream while Canonical is now promoting how Ubuntu is a great replacement to CentOS...

In my experience, Ubuntu LTS is a pretty good replacement for CentOS. 5 years of regular support is usually good enough and if you need to, you can buy extended support for a reasonable price. Some of the additional services like live kernel updates, are useful and reliable, too.

The only thing that is still a bit lacking is industry support. CentOS/RHEL is often still the go-to distribution for various 3rd party closed-source software packages.

If some company needs a good replacement for CentOS there is a great replacement called RHEL.
CentOS you can use if you are a small businesses like 5-15 people. Why these big ass, rich companies raking in billions of revenue won't just buy RHEL instead?

I think it’s a little premature to decide that CentOs is going away, but even if it does, Debian is the better replacement IMO.

Even then, people using CentOs usually need to have a RedHat like distribution, though. At some point there’ll be a distribution that mirrors Redhat commercial offering.

Ubuntu adds and changes things, which is definitely not what CentOs users want.

Wait what? 5 is good enough? I'd probably consider Windows Server more of a option if ubuntu comes with only 5 years. Thats a full stack change, that costs money and might also require new hardware. 5 years is barely the minimum for enterprise. Nothing you switch from a 8+ year distro.

But why? If you consider to pay/require support, go for RHEL directly.

What about distro-repo support. Whats with software that sits in multi- and universe. How is the support for them nowadays?

I think the decade long support cycle is a good selling point. Where it's going to get hung up are the enterprise apps expecting redhat config files, and ubuntu ain't a cognate on that end.

Additionally, redhat does full up your ass dial into your server support with custom kernel mods, if needed. They employ alot of kernel devs. Ubuntu will need to up their game on the high end, but for normal customers, it should be fine- assuming their apps support ubuntu, or vice versa.

Because you get rich by not spending all your money? CentOS was a reliable solution for companies who have an own team for support and I really wish there would be an RHEL option for this too. But hey… https://rockylinux.org/ i guess. Let's wait for November when we start to switch to something.

Aside from what lumks said, much of what you're paying for with RHEL is support. If you're a big rich company, you can hire a good IT team. Having people you trust within your company, understanding your systems and workflow is going to result in less downtime than someone who has no context.

RHEL is good for medium-sized companies, where they can afford the license but not another IT person.

                  CentOS:
                  10 Years Support
                  Close to Upstream
Supported by the people (or rather was) that work closely on the upstream projects
                  No Vendor Lock In
                  Community Project

                  Ubuntu:
                  5 Years Support
                  Vendor Lock In
Long history of just abandoning projects
Long history of not working well with upstream (next Ubuntu freezes gnome due to not liking it's direction)
Company is based out of a tax haven

                  Yep, great replacement.

For the same reason the average person works a 40 hour week and still needs SNAP (food stamps) and other forms of government assistance: They're the kind of people who want more than they'll ever need at the expense of their own community.

Billionaires are the biggest freeloaders there are. They pay people to go to Congress to get laws passed so they can freeload even more. Anytime they pass "tax cuts", they're enabling more rich people to freeload off the rest of us. Roads suck? Tax cuts. School has a leaky roof? Tax cuts. Can't get food or unemployment assistance? Tax cuts. Can't get make ends meet with SSI? Tax cuts.

And you ask why they'll use CentOS for free over paying for RHEL? They go out of their way to pass laws that ensure old, disabled ladies can't get SSI so they don't have to pay a bit more in taxes. Yeah, I'm just a little upset that my Mom gets screwed over after working hard her whole life so Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates can get a tax cut.
