I've given up on Android. Google just sucks too much to keep devoting my time to their platform. Why would I risk installing some shady Chinese binary-only rootkit on my devices just so I can open them up enough to run real Linux?

Instead, I'm running 64-bit Gentoo Linux on my Raspberry Pi 4 and loving every minute of it. No rootkit required.

In fairness, the requirement to use shady binary-only rootkits depends on what device you have, but yes, even that is a very poor state of affairs.
