  • [Zorin OS 15 Core] Help a Linux newbie?

Hi after watching some Youtube reviews on the above OS, i've decided that it would be my distro of choice when i migrate away from Windows Anyway instead of dual booting Windows and zorin i've decided to re-purpose a spare desktop in my guest room at home to run solely Zorin OS 15 Core to wean me off Windows at least in that machine ^^ Ok 1st the hardware on experimental rig:

    AMD Phenom II X3 710
    Biostar A880G+ board
    HD 4250 IGP
    8GB DDR3 1333 RAM
    80GB Samsung SATA hdd

Now pls note that i am a complete linux noob but my future Zorin rig would be mostly an office/net/htpc machine. The 1st thing i did was install Kodi from Software Center and it went well! My next 2 major tasks are
    a) getting a Brother DCP-7040 AIO Laser Printer working and
    b) getting a Geniatech T-230 DVB-T2 USB TV Tuner working and view-able inside Kodi (i've done this in Windows via NPVR add on in Kodi)

Now being a linux newbie i have to confess that having things work simply by clicking stuff in Software Center would be my 1st choice? That said getting things done in Terminal is a must long term in any distro of linux i assume? Can a) and b) be settled over Software Center currently or not? For b) i am thinking TVHeadend as i've heard it works fine as a PVR add on in Kodi for linux? My train of thought is : get hardware installed and working fine in experimental rig before moving to next upgrade (prolly a Zen2 based APU when it comes out?) Thks in advance to anyone who could help or give tips ya!

Update : i've been fiddling around by connecting the T-230 tuner to the machine and did a "dmesg" command in Terminal (yes!) From a Windows uder P.O.V am i correct this is a linux equivalent of getting the machine to "Device Manager" mode/check to see what hardware is connected to the machine? Anyway this was the output (relevant portion?)

how do i get it working inside Kodi on Zorin OS 15 Core?

Hmm eventually decided to go with Kaffeine as many reported it is linux noob friendly and am pleased to report my Geniatech T-230 is up and running and the DVB-T2 channels looks great

For sharing purposes in case others happen to have the same hardware/OS

#1 downloaded firmware files for T-230 (2 files) on another machine, transferred to usb stick
    dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw
    dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw

#2 transfered 2 files to Zorin machine's desktop then these commands
    sudo cp Desktop/dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw /lib/firmware
    sudo cp Desktop/dvb-tuner-si2158-a20-01.fw /lib/firmware

#3 installed Kaffeine via Software Center

i restarted the Zorin machine and afters the T-230 was detected as "Device 1" when i started Kaffeine and from there scan channels. I had to do it twice cos 1st time i didn't click "add filtered"
