i bet you are fun at parties.... what advancement are you talking about here? Nothing is holding linux back. The public perception from the joe user is Ubuntu does not care for its users, just elitist like you. We are not talking fucking servers here. We are talking about a desktop os. Irritates me greatly that elitist bs kind of confuse the two.... and i am a unix/linux admin of 25+ years. You can have both you know? If you want a consumer hostile distro, then go to fedora.

Trust in Ubuntu not messing things up. This kind of stuff, Mir debacle and so on. I'm not personally using Ubuntu and don't plan to. But it's quite obvious these kind of events are ruining trust of those who use it for whatever reason.

I'd say the opposite. They had a plan, but turned out not very realistic for many of their users. So they take a step back and to fix the issue. Would have been worse with an attitude that they don't care.

EVERYONE has gone 64 bit. IDE'S AND COMPILERS are dropping 32 bit support left and right. BUT OMG WINE AND MY 32 BIT VERSION OF QUAKE 2 IN UBUNTU?? TO ARMS...TO ARMS!! HUZZAH !!

Get OFF YOUR ASS....and learn how to package a Snap or Flatpak and/or learn LXD containers. Or pleaee SHOVE OFF as quickly as possible to your favorite "hobbyist" distro choice like Linux Mint or whatever Arch flavor of the month that hadn't been abandoned yet and let the adults continue to pave the way to a cleaner, more manageable Linux world with Ubuntu without us hearing you bitch dead tech.
You dont know jack. There is more 32bit software running in windows than 64bit. omfg... Noone is pure 64bit you moron.... even rhel runs 32bit stuff unless you are running on Power. If you think this makes things more manageable, it actually makes it worse. You are not going to bring windows or mac refugees if you kneecap the capabilities of the os.

Judging by a wave of people ditching Ubuntu now, it's far from "opposite".

The sad part is that mentally challenged Ubuntu maintainers needed a backlash to remember that proprietary software, wine and games exist. I wouldn't trust these people to design a logo for a distro, let alone maintain one.

To all you that keep saying gamers dont matter: Gaming is a $200+ billion a year business. It is only second to porn. I really dont understand your animosity towards gamers. I am one and have been since playing pacman in the arcade. Gaming is the only reason Windows is still relevant. ... not office stuff since for the last 5 to 10 years you could do it on the web with office 360. Win8 landed with such a thud in part from chasing the tablets and ignoring the gamers. Gamers that are high level, high influencers at the places they work. Win 10 has tried to correct that, but damage has been done. Joe user does not care about your containers, snaps, or other new tech flavor of the week (all of these are half baked). Joe user just wants to do their stuff and play games or other entertainment. If you think that is not important, you are not paying attention.

                  LXD is amazing.

But providing a container with all needed 32b libs means the original argument (providing 32b support is costing too much) doesn't hold. The effort is same as with providing multilib. Or more: same as with providing a 32b distribution.

Maybe Canonical should speak next time to their friends at Microsoft, then they know the date when support for legacy 32 bit applications will end.

I really can't see how something simple like multilib could holding back a Linux distributions, these are essentials that a distribution must get right. Maybe Canonical should learn then how to do proper package management that doesn't require a lot of maintenance or maintainers? That the users had to tell them, that their plan to cut off 32 bit is a stupid idea, explains a lot to me.

I agree with Canonical. Apps like Wine should be packaged in Snaps or Flatpaks. It's very annoying to see a page-full of dependencies to be installed when you do "apt install wine".
