I wouldn't consider this to be "silly", as it's almost condescending, and recursive acronyms are the peak of good naming conventions. Naming versions like something out of a book intended for children isn't clever nor funny.

I think you're taking the tradition too seriously if you find it to be "almost condescending". It's all just good spirited fun to lighten up the mood.

In Swedish we have the expression "smaken är som baken" (literally translated "the taste is like the rear"), which essentially means we don't think others will like the same thing we like. It's sort of a more explicit version of "you can't please everyone".

It's much of the same here; I find the silly names hilarious but I don't expect everyone to agree with my humor. If it reminds you of a children's book then so be it.
