I love the idiots who keep using the same "if you don't like it, fork it, it's open source".

Even assuming everyone was a skilled programmer to do such task, how delusional can you be to not understand that time is not infinite. It's a valuable resource. It might shock you, but even programmers are users of other software for the majority of the time. As a user you get to complain about things you don't have time to patch yourself.

    For crying out loud.

Anyway I'm surprised to not see hreindl here yet.

As a fellow Digital Personal Workstation owner, I salute you. o7

Mine currently doesn't have an OS, and I was just going to put OpenVMS on it, but it'd be cool to try Linux as well. It would be cool if you wrote up a guide when you're done.

systemd I'd say is the standard, it's been adopted by all the big players.

systemd doesn't compete with runit, etc. RHEL, Ubuntu etc aren't going to drop systemd anytime soon and move away.

Don't get me started on CSD

I don't have much against glibc, but I love musl-libc.
I use Alpine Linux whenever possible.

The way systemd progresses threatens our ability to use musl-libc (or other libc's) and distro's based on that or other libc's.

Like rastersoft said, software that depends on systemd also exclude most other unix variants.

Maybe we should let them be and then develop our own new less bloated portable system/desktop, so we can have 16 competing standards

That's what I was saying and why I like systemd overall. It's great to use different distributions and use the same common tools to configure it all. What you learn at one place translates to other places and you can then choose distributions based on package versions & management, desktop environment, supported features, etc without fear that you'll have to relearn everything.

If anything, everything else competes with systemd.

systemd might be the reason some distributions might cease to exist ...

              I will stop now.
I made my point that systemd is not portable to non-glibc systems (including other unix like systems) and poses a problem for software that depends on it.

You have been informed, make of it what you want.

Then I guess those distributions didn't have a reason to exist.

systemd should work on musl now. those other unix-like systems should have an init system that takes advantage of their kernel, like launchd on OS X.

Embrace your new ever bloating future

After all, we make our software in our own image: Slow and bloated ...

Bulk of GNU stuff (coretools and such) is a horrible hair-pulling mess for anyone coming from Unix.

Wine doesn't compile with LTO, that doesn't make either LTO or Wine bad things, it just means more work needs to be done to make them compatible. The same can be said of non-glibc and systemd.

I can make the exact same comparison with Steam, actually, just proprietary games in general, and non-glibc systems. Games are the only reason I don't bother with non-glibc systems. Make of it what you want.
