Besides, this is just a maintenance release, it would be weird to jump to the Quantum firefox as that would break a ton of stuff (addons?).

FF60 esr is in Debian Experimental repo https://packages.debian.org/experimental/firefox-esr so it will eventually end in a Debian release, I doubt they will switch Firefox esr on current releases though.

FF 60.0.2 ESR can bei installed from the experimental repo. I think they won't switch in testing/unstable before the end of the life cycle of FF 52 ESR.

There is a few myths in the Linux community that starts to really get on my nerves such as systemd being monolithic, BTRFS eats your data, pulseaudio does not work and that Debian is old. Debian come in three major variantes. Stable (old software), Testing (mostly up to date software) and Unstable (which is bleeding edge).

It will make sense for debian jessie (oldstable) to switch to ff 60 esr, if it does run. There are overlapping releases i.e. new releases of both 52 and 60 for a few months, then 52 reaches EOL sometime in september. Thus you'd expect security-wise that oldstable and stable get switched to 60.x.x esr by then.
I don't know the schedules or if jessie is too old for 60 esr (older libraries) but then I would expect stable (stretch) to switch to 60 esr at the least.

And OldStable (Jessie currently; truly old software), and sometimes OldOldStable (Wheezy currently; old enough software that you need an archaeology degree to be allowed to dig in it.)
