Landing just prior to the official Ubuntu 18.04 "Bionic Beaver" release was the controversial Ubuntu software/hardware survey functionality. When announcing their plans to incorporate an optional survey process into the installation process, Canonical said they would be making this survey data public. They are doing so, but it will be a while before it's accessible...

Of course they will share it from day one with Microsoft and other paying third parties, but the non-paying users will have to wait and believe the uncertainty of opening it up.

without enought users what the point of survey? most of users only go to ubuntu 18.04 after first point release in 4/5 mounths, they should do this, since is the only way to see what users use or not. Without such surveys linux desktop will continue a piece of garbage in most systems, without proper dual graphics support, not good in laptops, etc because the open source community bosses are old or use apple produts at home

Who cares? Right now the data is negligible. Automatic updates for 16.04 installations will roll out with 18.04.1 in about - half a year? Anyway, feel free to use another distribution and stop ranting.

Sniff, well, atleast they'll get to gather more data. Think of how it would look if they only had a data set on only tens of thousands or a hundred thousand. Not everyone will switch to 18.04 imidiatly.

None is going to pay for the kinds of data they are collecting, it's completely useless outside of its intended purpose (hardware/software installation statistics of Ubuntu users), and less-than optimal even for its purpose.

I think Linux is a piece of garbage in most systems because of crappy, unintuitive interfaces like Gnome 3, not because of drivers.
