Phoronix: XFree KWin: Ridding KDE's Wayland Compositor Of X11 Dependencies

Martin Flöser (nee Gräßlin) has announced the "XFree KWin" project. This isn't to be confused with XFree86 but rather is about ridding KWin optionally of X11/X.Org dependencies...

Great! Now let's get rid of the XWayland and X11 dependencies in both KDE and GNOME apps. Then we'll have slim, mean, fast apps running directly on Wayland without being bogged down by the slow Xwayland middle man.

Sounds like this approach can solve some of the instability issues. Allowing Kwin to reload e.g. XWayland will hopefully reduce system freezes and make Plasma on Wayland as stable as on X11.

Once the desktop environments are free of needing X, maybe we'll start seeing all of the new Linux games being made for Wayland-only environments, too.

                    Née Gräßlin?
Née is female. Should be Né.
And that means it changed surname after marriage?!?
