I only ever use Writer, but at least that app is much better than Word almost every way. Its only weakness, admittedly an important one, is that PDF import is much better in MS.

Calc isn't as easy to use as Google Spreadsheets or WPS.

Also, needs a new name. I hate opening my launch menu and accidently loading LO Calc instead of Calculator. Infuriating.

I hope they move the Notebook Bar option out of Experimental Features and have it usable not only on Writer, Calc and Impress, but also on Draw.

And seriously, do something about the Notebook Bar. For an attempt at a ribbon-style UI, it's terrible; too many options are still locked away in the dropdown menus for it to be seriously usable. Even Office 2007's ribbon UI is superior to LO 5.4's Notebook Bar.

Maybe, either your distribution did not compile in the quickstarter function or it's not activated by default. You might check you startup scripts / directories on your desktop environment. Or did they plan to remove it in future versions?
It's part of the release notes under Platform Compatibility:
          The Linux Quickstarter is removed.
So it has nothing to do with a specific distribution.
