For the record: my desktop has files arranged in the grid, sorted (manually) by age, more or less, and every now and then I evaluate and delete/move/archive older ones to keep it at less than half full status.

Because I was genuinely curious, I never saw many people ask for something like that.
Visually grouping the contents of a single large folder into spatial patterns beats breaking it up into subdirectories. It's the most basic feature that I've never been able to find in a linux file manager.

phoronix Michael, you need to correct your articles...Chrome integration with plasma WILL NOT happen in 5.10... another commenter posted this link in the original article.
Key phrase: "...despite what certain news sites claim, it will not be part of Plasma 5.10"

Bug 279038 - Animated zoom effect when entering/leaving a folder (reported 2011-08-01)
When entering/leaving a folder, dolphin should apply a zoom-in/zoom-out animation to visualize to the user what is going on. Moreover, the breadcrumb view should perform an animation effect as well, like sliding the new folder in or out, respectively.

... or maybe the reason for wanting this feature is all too obvious from the edit to my last post:

Spring loading and folder view by default. Nice to have that. First was always on my wish list. Second is a detail but takes the burden to switch it manually.
