Firefox is set to autoupdate itself by default setting on Windows, so yeah, they can push whatever there since forever. Consider that 99% of their userbase is on Windows.

There is no need to fret and go paranoid mode.

That sort of thing is a minor example of why I always advise people for whom courts and police are considered adversaries never to use MS Windows for private communcations, and not to use any kind of phone for such matters either. Windows itself and it's Google-like privacy defaults are the major reason. I fully support the decision of some torrent sites to ban Windows 10 machines entirely from using their services over the threat of the RIAA or MPAA exploiting Win 10 "privacy" antifeatures.

My guess is Firefox is using auto-update on Windows to protect the opposite kind of user, the kinds who surf to random porn sites and also shop and bank online from the same device-and never update anything themselves. Such users actually need to dedicate separate devices to different security compartments just as much as a guerilla fighter who also uses Grindr to meet dates does. That, unfortunately, is something Firefox devs can't fix, as new Windows exploits come in as fast as the old ones can be fixed.

And no, if you look at how good (= effective) malware works, you'll notice that web browser vulnerabilities do play a major role in getting the malware in, then it has to use other holes to infect the machine, but a Perfectly Safe Browser (unobtanium) would pretty much keep safe a system even alone.

I'm of course ignoring the idiots that just install all they can find from whatever source without even looking. That kinds of people are better kept on mobile-like systems (Android or iOS) that were designed from the ground up to keep these kinds of animals caged and safe.

You are not kidding. I did see a university get this right: they had Windows XP machines about ten years ago that always booted to a new system image the way a live disk does in LInux. Users could install anything that did not require admin priviliges, and no matter what went wrong a reboot amounted to a 'factory reset." I always rebooted before using these to wipe out spyware bundled with the Kazaa and Limewire students installed, then afterwards to kill any records of what I was doing that had not been explicitly logged to remote storage.

I've had to migrate non-hackers to Linux just to stop the Windows malware that was botting their machines. The Linux issues are not nearly as bad from malware, and if they screw it up so bad nuking from orbit saves time there are no license keys to track down and activations to deal with.
