Skype is one of those things that I don't run around trying to use but it's something that I have to use on occasion.
It's good to see more support for Linux for those times when I have to use it, and it's nice to see them adopting WebRTC too.

Do they still spy on your computer with it?

While many of you anticipated it would be Skype moving to a browser-only solution on Linux, what they have just announced is a brand new Linux client.
Well, it was pretty much anticipated. Instead of going to a website, you have to download it and running it with a web renderer.

Seems like big companies lost the ability to make desktop app. Web things are cheap, any idiot can do JavaScript and CSS.

So the new client is 64-bit? That would be great news!

Well, webrtc filters probably mean that they got rid of that proprietary codec that was pretty good 10 years ago but nowadays it isn't worth disk space / network traffic it occupies.
Apart from being completely useles for anything other than human speech it suffered from volume normalization going bananas and annoying echo / sound modulation "effects".
