    While VDPAU is indeed tied to X currently, that's not by design, the window system hooks are a very small part of libvdpau, so support for new window systems isn't a huge amount of work. Now that Nvidia is on board with Wayland, we might see this work happen soon.

    Then, VAAPI *already* works very well on Wayland. mpv supports it. You need a fairly new version (at least 0.16 I think) and mesa 11.2. Heck, mpv supports VAAPI even at the console, neither X or Wayland required!

    About OpenMax, no, it doesn't stand a chance. It's a huge mess, where, as blackshard said, every vendor does things differently. The only successful use of OpenMax I'm aware of is omxplayer on the Raspberry Pi. That's it. And even the RPi has an easier to implement alternative, MMAL.
