Of all the money that the GNOME foundation *handles* (GNOME did not get half a million, it only did the administration for OPW), I think OPW is the only part that goes *directly* to software improvements.
Out of the 44 OPW interns, GNOME had 3 (https://gnome.org/opw/), the kernel had 5.

Wow KDE is much more configurable and gives more freedom to the regular users, on top of that most of the KDE programs are more usable than GNOME ones and yet they make less while doing way more?

The cool thing is, you don't even have to imagine it, because that is what the money was used for.

Each participating organization selects their interns from a great number of applicants and has at least one mentor assigned to each intern through the internship.
So the organisations decide which work they would like to have supported by the sponsors's money and the mentors make sure that the work actually happens.

The same thing is for example also true for Google's Summer of Code: people apply, organisations select from the pool based on what they find worthwhile, mentors guide the participants to ensure to the best of their abilities that it is worthwhile.

Interestingly, when Google handles several millions of USD people understand that not all is spent on Google software, but when the GNOME foundation handles half a million they can't comprehend. Weird.

        Cheers,
        _

Quite amazing what you can actually develop something for, I doubt the whole of KDE's budget would even pay for the Windows start menu teams annual coffee bill.

It's a waste of money. Not to mention it's genuinely racist and sexist. As a Gnome user, I find it incredibly offensive they're participating in something so discriminatory.

            Straight white males not allowed.

Too bad so much time and money is wasted on this collectivist drivel. Here's a novel idea... Select interns based on their interest rather than what's between their legs, or the color of their skin.

Since the organisations select applicants and their projects based on their needs, it is not wasted but spent for the needs of the organisation.

Wasting would imply that they select unwisely and accept applications that do not help with their needs.
I highly doubt that's the case anymore than it is with the money Google provides for GSoC.

                "... KDE e.V. took in 190 EUR and spent 160 EUR ..."
Better would be "... KDE e.V. took in 190 thousand EUR and spent 160 thousand EUR ..."
