We'll see for sure if it's a tipping point or not in due time. It really depends on content providers, physical media is becoming less common. Personally I think the tipping point will only come once physical media is considered rare. The more people that stop buying physical media the better.

Yet another alliance that most likely won't deliver. FFS We don't even have HW accelerated VP9 yet.

Tegra X1 has fixed hw vp9 decoder, it's kind of odd that desktop gpus does not have it(not that vdpau supports vp8/9 anyway...).

Skylake has hybrid vp9 decoder(don't really know how effective it is and knowing hybrid decoders, getting software support for linux is quite slim).

A Microsoft browser is supporting WebM and the related codes. That is BIG news.

Yeah, based on how long it took them to support FLAC in Windows Media Player, I would have guessed WebM support in 2020 at the earliest.

Did that Microsoft have termed Linux a cancer?

"Microsoft" didn't label Linux as cancer, a Microsoft CEO did. One who is now gone.

Where is Apple? They will not succeed if Apple is not supporting them.
