PulseAudio 6.0 Is Coming & Other Linux Audio Plans For The Future
It's not really system wide, if more than one user can't play sounds at the same time. So if i have 2 login sessions on a computer (say mine and my wife's) only one of us (however logged in first) can play sound. Also there is no official support for running as a system service, i.e. on a headless server. there is also limited user doc, as the PA guys feel it's the responsibility of distros to do a good job getting it setup. That said, you are correct it is far better after PA than before. I can now fairly easily stream some or all of the sound from my desktop to my headless server with minimal lag.
