What do MPV / mplayer / mplayer2 provide that vlc and xmbc do not provide?

An actual light player that works, without bloat. VLC is a big GUI, while XBMC is monstrous in comparison.

Nothing. But the VLC GUI is attrocious.

It's either SMPlayer for me, or nothing. I don't really care that SMPlayer uses mplayer. All I care about is the SMPlayer GUI. So it's not a question about VLC vs mplayer. It's VLC vs SMPlayer.
