GTK2 is used by many projects on Linux, but they don't seem to "upgrade" to GTK3.

Upgrading takes time, and is often low priority. There is no reason to rush its not like GTK2 is going anywhere just yet. That said both Firefox and Gimp have active GTK3 ports in progress.

Gnome has Red Hat, commercial SUSE, Intel and by your standards also Endless Mobile etc. Blue systems is by no means a corporate support. Blue Systems is about a CS drop out without a business plan having fun burning his part of the family trust fund. Today Blue Systems, tomorrow boarding ISS or climbing Mt Rainier. Like other rich kids he can sell off and go have fun. Climbing Mt Rainier along Mark Shuttleworth would be ideal after selling off to Redmond.

Suse supports KDE more, GNOME is just an extra DE in SLED.

Gnome is the only desktop out there with sane corporate support. Fragmenting away because you don't like some design choices or fonts seems quite silly to me. 4 times as many LOCs and a bug explosion is the only outcome. Merits change Linux desktops, not silly forks and flames. And this is said by a happy Gnome-classic user who benefits from said corporate support. Trying out the forks was fun but they will never have the bandwidth to become something you can trust.

*I dont think Canonical is sane corporate support. They have yet to become profitable and the single point of ownership doesn't look too good when the owner already did a sell-and-run in his former high-growth company. Sane corporate support means multiple profitable companies with a diverse board and broad ownership.

Canocial moves away from GNOME.
GNOME has Red Hat as corporate support.
KDE has Blue Systems which is not so large as Red Hat but it has it. But the backend of KDE QT is supported by Digia and Qt has more widely use than GTK will ever have.
GTK2 is used by many projects on Linux, but they don't seem to "upgrade" to GTK3.
Qt has the advantage that projects can use nearly the same gui code (and more) on every plattform.

I'm really looking foward to Music: Rhythmbox is stable and has nice features, but an appalling UI. And the gitg integration: git-cola is lacking in a few places, but just compare it against TortoiseGit on Windows...

Why write a new application, when there's an already working one that needs just a better gui?
