You do realize Jack doesn't actually play any audio right? Jack only allows multiple audio related programs to pass there audio buffers back and forth, and then that gets sent to alsa.

      If Jack sucks then ...

      A. PulseAudio is getting in the way of Jack.
      B. Jack isn't setup right.
      C. Your kernel isn't setup for Realtime Audio processing.
      D. Your using Ubuntu.
      E. You computer sucks.

Just go down the list and check/fix each one eventually it will not suck anymore. I did and it hasn't sucked since.

In case of problem E: Buy the best 2 year old hardware you can find, Avoid anything AMD or ATI only purchase Intel and Nvidia gear, and Only buy Pro Gear. Also ... Get a SSD Drive and at-least a 2TB Hard Drive
Install Linux on the SSD and mount your /home on the 2 TB Hard Drive. Read about SSD tweeks. Get as Much RAM as you can afford. A really good high wattage PSU, a monster Nvidia card and make sure your Intel CPU is a i3, i5 or i7. Get a Pro Audio Card also.

My system cost me $650 after doing the research and looking around. And as an example Kubuntu boots in 2sec on my machine. The only problems I have are related to Kwin and not my hardware.

I think one of the biggest problems with Linux desktops is they are to integrated, one program ends up causing problems across the board. Making tracking the problem down almost impossible. Kde is a good example of this if Solid or what ever its called now crashes then you loose audio to all your programs. If Kwin starts doing weird shit with OpenGL then Dolphin starts to act funny.

Yes, I've known that for some time, the performance still isn't there. The fastest ARM chips are barely faster then Intel Atom CPUs. Meaning that they will do well in the tasks I listed but not good at all for heavy lifts.
