A less confusing system settings could be useful to many people. I mostly find stuff via the search box. Just lump all settings you don't think belong in the main view under an "advanced" option, rather than bothering with profile switching?

Right now, we made a 'SimplifiedSystemSettings" which by default only shows about half the modules. We're working on creating modules which coalesce several into one or just have a simpler configuration. Many modules right now expose very low-level stuff that you'll almost never have to care about. But this'll take time and what we have now is just very basic. Actually, the simplified config isn't even merged ATM so people who've been trying this out have gotten exactly nothing

Interesting that this mainly deals with the psychology of what is considered fast/light. Question, though, how will PIM applications work without Akonadi now?

It won't. If you install KDE PIM, it brings in Akonadi.

Maybe the KlyDE devs should team up with the razor-qt people to come up with a killer lightweight desktop that looks great yet stays out of the way plus being frugal with resources. Akonadi is a sore spot as its a resource pig, and KDEpim in 3.5 was pretty slim and was usable so why not somehow refactor KDEpim to allow it to run sans Akonadi

Again, the two projects have nothing in common, aside from similar goals. The approach to the goal is very different, however.

Interesting, so another distro is finally going to try this. At the very least, as-needed installation of KDE packages is something we've had in Gentoo since... well, KDE 3.5 is the earliest I remember it.

openSUSE already has relatively fine grained packages. KLyDE will just improve it further.

Razor has nothing to do with this. It's all KDE stuff here, just remixed.

Because nobody works on an Akonadi-less Kontact and Akonadi itself works great. Akonadi has a plugin-based system. Individual plugins may be buggy.

KlyDE really sounds like a breath of fresh air, I would love to try this as soon as it is ready! I hope this cuts out the plasma icon or at least makes it a option not a feature. I am running KDE 3.5 from the opensuse build service repository. I love it but it is currently crippled in many areas due to HAL being phased out.

Yea. At first I thought it was another project just like it, but actually it's just a repackage of KDE, so that's a much smaller project in scale, while still retaining the advantage of having all KDE-specific capabilities.

It seam that kde startup had hard coded sleep(4000)...


So something new would be welcomed.
(Not that arch+kde+e4rat is slow on my machine :P)
