x is not outdated. x was already crap when it came out. back in the 90s normal people did not use unix, so the x devs didn't have to deal with angry customers. if windows had the same graphical glitches people would have hanged Microsoft from a lamppost. people don't realize how tolerant nerds are of bad software and their willingness to UseEsotericWorkarounds.

how about ut2004, lightsmark, unigine, or some other non-shit quake based engine benchmarks.

I still don't know why they don't run more Unigine benchmarks, THOSE are the ones that matter for gaming.

its not X's fault, its unity's

there are hardware accelerated composing window managers out there that don't have problems with full screen 3D apps, so why the 2 of you blame X...

How would ut2004 be a better benchmark that an updated and optimized Quake derivative like Darkplaces (Xonotic)?

                Unredirecting fullscreen windows

I think it'd be more interesting to compare also with unredirect fullscreen windows option turned on, similar to testing both the default and suspend setting with KDE4. In compizconfig-settings-manager, the setting is under Composite settings.

According to last comment on bug #980663, the setting will not be enabled by default for now because of remaining driver and (more minor) compiz bugs. But advanced users and gamers should make a note about it.

Speaking as someone who's entire backend was VMX VAX for a decade: I call BS. X was very good when it first came out; better then Windows at the time. Problem is, the backend of the kernel hasn't advanced nearly as much as it has in Windows (especially as of NT 6.1.xxxxxxx), so its a lot less stable. Unix/Linux/BSE needs something like the WDDM.

Do they enable some kind of debuging in compiz before final release? Problems with not enough video memory is back (I had it in 12.04 beta too). Tvtime crashes when I try to fullscreen it, apple trailers that use totem shows all white screen when I fullscreen it, and a lot of windows when unminimized are black.

I have Nvidia 7600GT with 256MB VRAM and 304.51 drivers.

Enable oneiric-proposed or wait 1-2 days for the new compiz release to land in Ubuntu 12.10. It fixes, beneath others, two major NVidia regressions.
