  • ClearType / font hinting for portrait mode - see inside (you know you want to)

Does anyone know whether freetype can 'rotate' the implementation of hintslight to hint in the x-direction rather than the y-direction?

I have rotated my monitor 90deg into portrait mode and while this is perfect for reading text, the text itself is not as legible as it should be. The issue is that freetype always applies its hinting code to the y-direction, which makes sense for monitors with horizontal subpixel layout (where the y-direction is the low-res one). Obviously, this assumption does not hold here (since I rotated the monitor and the subpixels now lie vertically, making the x-direction the low-res one).

I have set my subpixel layout to VRGB in the font properties (Ubuntu), but still freetype doesn't get the hint - pardon the pan.

    Any ideas?
