The sidebar looks pretty useless tbh. Why do I want to fill the screen with statistics and metadata such as file encodings 24/7?

It's probably shown only if you hit a toggle button (maybe the info button we see in the bar?)

The Android backend sounds like something super interesting! I would love to be able to run all my GNOME apps on my Android device.
Deprecating support for X11 sounds good, we have Wayland now which is great so we don't need X.Org Server anymore.
The new sidebar in GNOME Text Editor looks useless and pointless.

I could be wrong about this so someone with more knowledge correct me, but it could be that a little bit of GNOME Builder is seeping into Text Editor ? I mean, I can see a use case for having this additional information at the click of a switch but YMMV. Unlike the typical anti-GNOME Taliban reply as above…..you don’t like it or need it then under no circumstances click that toggle. That way the big bad boogeyman Sidebar won’t scare you at night.

I thought it seemed kind of useful . . . especially since GNOME is kind of known for not being that useful by presenting a minimalist interface. That interface wasn't minimalist and it has toggles and options. To me, that's rather unexpected.

Also, I saw the fine details in that screenshot . . . 2 spaces for tab? 2? No, it's 4. 4 is the correct number. You should only do two spaces in a tab only if thou thence proceed to three and then four. 5!? 5 is right out. The number of spaces is 4 and 4 shall be the number of spaces.

I've used geany for years. Take a look at their sidebars.

I’ve used geany also. That’s why I use GNOME text editor.

Great. I would love a file view and a terminal in the bottom like in the old Gedit also.
