GTK's X11 Backend Now Deprecated, Planned For Removal In GTK 5

Phoronix: GTK's X11 Backend Now Deprecated, Planned For Removal In GTK 5

GTK developers have been holding another hackfest this week for the annual FOSDEM developer conference happening this weekend in Brussels. GTK developers are working toward the GTK 4.18 stable release and continuing to think more about GTK 5...

Well. To continue the deprecation phase until the OpenGL complete removal in favor of Vulkan.

YES !! Let the present begin . I would say the future but this future should have began long in the past. Linux should continue to keep the best of Unix and shed the rest that was once ok in the 1970’s but has no place in the 21st Century.

Yep…it’s next and probably by the end of the decade if not sooner.

It's just make sense to deprecate x11 on the next big version bump.

Also Linux apps working natively in android? That's really exciting. Due to open source nature, versatility, portability, and high demand in android development, people start to teach students gtk. Or at least, android devs take a notice, and boost development and innovation on gtk knowing there's shared tool to develop on both linux desktop and android. That's my hope.

Agreed. The Android news was a nice surprise.

Well I needed a reason not to use GTK applications, now GTK developers have solved it for me.

Hopefully Firefox/Thunderbird will never switch to it and maybe just maybe they will even switch to something that actually cares about legacy, e.g. Qt.

While I agree that it's a bit premature, as there are still issues with Wayland, like accessibility for example, however, Wayland is the the future and that's a fact, so X11 needs to be deprecated eventually. I just hoped it'd be in GTK 6, assuming Wayland is fully fleshed out by then.

If an Android GTK port is possible, could an iOS port be possible too?

I'm all for the bright future but X11 compatibility is crucial/essential and mustn't be dropped.
