GNOME Shell 48 Alpha Introduces Screen Time / Health Breaks, Mutter 48 Alpha Out Too

Phoronix: GNOME Shell 48 Alpha Introduces Screen Time / Health Breaks, Mutter 48 Alpha Out Too

The "48.alpha" releases of GNOME Shell and Mutter were tagged on Sunday for this week's release of the GNOME 48 Alpha in leading up to the GNOME 48.0 stable release in mid-March...

Hope that triple buffering comes with GNOME 48.

Also, the biggest win of all that changelog is xdg toplevel drag protocol, one of the main blockers of native *mium wayland by default (and therefore, Electron and CEF apps).

The best keeps getting better ! This is a nice addition for those who find this necessary. More of us probably should find it so. Gnome keeps putting shine and polish on the best Linux DE for new arrivals and even old hands like me who still wear the scars of Desqview and Windows Version 1.

Whether it is better or worse is just a matter of taste and habits.
Personally I struggle to work on GNOME, but it is certainly my limit, even if maybe with twenty third-party extensions I could manage to do something, but luckily in GNU/Linux there is more.
Even if then actually the only DEs that I consider are only GNOME and KDE Plasma, the others seem like small almost amateur projects.

I wonder how they calculate the screen time. Currently I can't use gdm and have to lock my system with slock. Even with gdm the gpu / screen won't sleep properly and wakes up every minute or so.

It really does. I went into the article expecting to make a "Damn, now my PC is gonna nag at me, too " joke about this because that sort of writes itself with this kind of feature, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it looked and what it's trying to accomplish. If KDE had Wellness Settings that'd be a decent place to put the Night Light options (Color Temperature so GNOME folks know what we're talking about).

It's also called Night Light in GNOME.

The "digital well-being" stuff looks pointless to me. But hey, if that's what people want... then go for it. I'll be disabling this as soon as it lands. I'd rather they fix the client side cursor issues currently caused by Mutter (e.g., the blurry cursor when using Alacritty is actually a Gnome bug) than add more bloat that isn't really going to affect a meaningful improvement in user experience.
