I wouldn't say it's disconnected, but libmpv is a minimal subset of features. but for the important stuff you can find here
As of now, --vo=libmpv with the OpenGL backend has features roughly equivalent to --vo=gpu. Features only available in gpu-next are currently not available when using the rendering API. It would be...

Hello everybody, I saw this very old issue report and wanted to ask, whether it would be possible to make wayland-embedding in libmpv possible, too? This would be great!!! The vlc guys think about ...

Now technically, cosmic *can* do what they do with cosmic-panel to embed wayland applications (I put xeyes in my taskbar and yes, even mpv using this lmao, it's really buggy, don't do it) but that's not very cross platform which is something that cosmic strives to be. ffmpeg itself is also really bad in the rust ecosystem since every set of bindings likes to break often.

Cosmic player wont be as efficient as using something like dmabuf-wayland or whatever the equivilent is for x11 (been so long lol) but it shouldn't be too bad. gstreamer has recently had a lot of work done on making everything in the chain as efficient as possible.

But a media player? I get that it's consuming pieces that are doing the heavy lifting, but again, this is non-zero work. If at all possible to have whatever engineering resources working on this contribute to getting the rest of COSMIC into beta and through to GA instead, that seems like a potentially better choice (to this outsider). Shipping MPV or some other video player wouldn't be the end of the world for COSMIC 1.0.
when it comes to a DE homogeneity is key. It's best to have as many applications you can as "cosmic" ones. Thankfully with cosmic-utils we do have decent other applications which can hopefully take the burden off of the pop team https://github.com/cosmic-utils

that being said, Im not sure if they will want to include them by default as cosmic. Some of them are pretty rough, though I know a big part for them is "tiling support" so if any of those don't do that well im sure they won't touch it. Or maybe they will fork

It doesn't play any sound for me. So yeah, black screen and no sound.

Edit: i just updated player, now it play mp3. But when i first posted, it didn't worked at all. Also funny thing, it didn't show correct time remaining, it's just time played +1s and with minus sign.

interesting that it didn't work the first time, I wonder if you were missing a plugin or something

Completely off topic, but xeyes as a taskbar widget sounds hilarious and amazing. I want it.

            Agree.
They don’t have an image viewer (the feature included in cosmic-files is not enough), no office document reader, no system monitor + monitor applets, no font management, but they have a video player already. Their prio list seems different than what some would put first.

Like, why, and how, MPV is not good enough for them?

libmpv is limited to the old vo=gpu capabilities and has no vulkan support. libmpv has fairly not great performance too because of how it handles stuff. libmpv has poor support for arm devices because ffmpeg has poor support for arm devices. libmpv makes cross platform development kind of painful and you often need a series of buildroots when gstreamer has stuff for pretty much every device. libmpv relies on ffmpeg for format support which means that gstreamer can often have a wider range of support for codecs, containers and protocols.

a video player is way higher on the list of priorities then a document reader.

as for an image viewer, why is cosmic-file's not enough? or is it that you want a full gallery app (too which I concur btw).

font management is done in two parts, one with cosmic-store to download fonts from the users repos with packagekit, and then you can set fonts in the settings. I would say that is "good enough" for a beta release. A dedicated application for dealing with fonts beyond this would be a way lower priority then a video player.

no system monitor + monitor applets for this I will point to cosmic-utils' https://github.com/cosmic-utils/observatory . It's in ok shape, rough around the edges, I don't think it will be included in any of the alphas, but i could see this being a beta application. As for applets, I don't think cosmic needs to concern itself with those. There are already a couple decent unofficial ones in cosmic-utils. Cosmic-store will have a method of filtering just "cosmic oriented apps" at some point if it doesn't already. but for now you can just search cosmic in the app and get a good idea.

as for a document reader, they have actually started working on a pdf viewer https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-reader but it is low priority seemingly, which is not really a surprise since it can be relatively difficult to do.

the main priority for a DE would be to cover the applications people are most likely to use. Things like an office suite are better suited for something else. so cosmic seems to be oriented in that direction and are doing a pretty good job thus far.
