Power users (people who typically don't like the over simplified Gnome interface) try to do more with less. Overhead matters in this case in this regard it's not even comparable to other free and open source solutions. It uses too much system resources and the latency is too high.
For me personally RDP is a problem when I want to access GUI of low spec VMs or when I want to steam games. In those cases it's still usable, the system doesn't crash but you get less than 1 FPS at times, while other free and open source solutions have 30 to 150 times better performance. This is why I call RDP trash. 1FPS is trash.
