What's wrong with RDP? Why is it "trash"?
Apparently RDP is a popular protocol that is widely used in the real world and people use it everyday to do their job.

It's slow, as in has high latency which causes screen tearing.

It has a very high overhead on the host and a relatively high overhead on the client.

Real world people who go on forums to post that the human eye can't see over 60Hz or those who just use notepad or spreadsheet wouldn't notice the difference unless they are on old hardware.

Power users (people who typically don't like the over simplified Gnome interface) try to do more with less. Overhead matters in this case in this regard it's not even comparable to other free and open source solutions. It uses too much system resources and the latency is too high.

For me personally RDP is a problem when I want to access GUI of low spec VMs or when I want to steam games. In those cases it's still usable, the system doesn't crash but you get less than 1 FPS at times, while other free and open source solutions have 30 to 150 times better performance. This is why I call RDP trash. 1FPS is trash.

RDP's performance is trash. Not as trash as design choices after Gnome 2 though, yikes. There's no other DE that spawned so many forks like Gnome 3 did after it was released.

If you want something open source, fast with excellent cross-platform support you should use https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine (server) and https://github.com/moonlight-stream (client). There are some missing features productivity features. The main focus is gaming and it does it really well.

Most NX, RDP, VNC solutions* don't come close in terms of latency and performance. Disclaimer I have yet to try wayvnc

* Proprietary solutions are usable on a small amount of systems running specific kernels while performance and latency is abysmal on most systems. Moonlight works very on all devices I have tried for example Windows, Linux, Mac, Raspberry Pi 4 with PiOS, and even Android & iOS.
