For those of us who don't use a graphical login manager and use 'startxfce4' to start X11 using xfce, does anyone know if there will be an equivalent way to start xfce with wayland ?

AFAIK it will continue to work exactly this way. XFCE has no plans to abandon X11/Xorg support.

Still looks so retro. Does it have autohide and bottom position for the taskbar now? Can I delete that dock? I have not touched XFCE since Plasma 5. I might give it a try if I can make my desktop completely empty, unless I need to see the taskbar.

Is xfce fully ported to GTK4 or are they still relying on GTK3?

The panel has been very flexible for a looooooong time. Including panel positioning, autohide etc. I'm not sure how long you've tried but it doesn't appear to be very long. IIRC, the features you describe have been in there since version 4.0 which was released 21 years ago.

As Misel said, you've been able to do whatever the hell you want with panels for a very long time. No panels? Sure! 4 panels in a crazy box? Knock yourself out! Make them look like a dock? You bet!

I still think the out of the box setup and default theming / icons / etc. have held back adoption for a long time. You can make Xfce look quite nice. People show off some amazing stuff with Xfce on the unixporn Reddit. But it takes work, and most people just assume it can only look like some relic of the '90s.

Xfce is very stable. It's quite modular. And it does just enough to be a feature rich full DE. I hope it sticks aroud and gets some more maintainers.

I've always found Arc to be a good starting point for Xfce theming: https://github.com/jnsh/arc-theme

I think the Fedora Xfce and Xubuntu spins would benefit from defaulting to it. Greybird only gets you so far…
