I find it pretty odd that a desktop and a pretty bad one at that sort of gets passed around by forum recommendation all over the place that it is the goto desktop with AMD GPU's and Wayland. Even if I had an AMD GPU why would I want to restrict myself to something like this?

Because it's nice to use, efficient and mostly stable. Easy as that. I personally like Gnome 3.x+ pretty much while not using more than 3 extensions.

It's just not another Windows 95 Clone Desktop. It's different, but its good.

Whenever someone tries to mock Gnome 3.x+ into Windows 95 again (i.e. taskbar, startmenu) that won't work without gripes and intervention, but Gnome 3 does not try to be like that and it's pretty well doing so.

Nice. Now we have at least 4 more dependencies (zzzz...); the build process says nothing about GNOME now requiring xdg-desktop-portal-gtk (good luck not including that in your running environment); pipewire is a hard dependency; all (!) extensions are broken because why not break the API once again; the applications startup time is even slower as unbelievable as it may sound; gnome-console is shipped in beta stage although the final release was ready before GNOME 45 release; as usual they incorrectly require many dependencies to be newer than necessary (gnome-console final release, for instance, requires gtk4 4.12.2 although it works perfectly with 4.12.1); etc; etc.

On top of that we have beautiful bugs, like:

In Files (Nautilus) if you go back one folder and double click another folder (not the one that is already selected), you don't go inside it because the first click is spent just selecting the folder.

Also in Files if you click on Properties (of a folder) it will not show the correct total size if there are hidden subfolders/files and Nautilus is set to not show hidden files/folders.

Recording video may not work and the user/distro maintainer will have zero feedback about which dependencies are missing.

Did I say performance is still terrible?

And the list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, for the oceans of machines that only ever shipped with 4gb RAM there is Bodhi Linux which uses less than a quarter of the resources to provide a fully functional gui desktop on an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS base.

Add that some comments forgot about GNOME Classic (extended GNOME Shell) session which address their needs.

Another "stable" version released while serious bugs remain. For example if you're still on Xorg, because you actually want to play some games or do any color managed work, enjoy tearing in full screen windows (#mutter/2794). Perhaps, you want to use an actual taskbar and minimize windows, enjoy janky animations (#mutter/2317). Or maybe use the alt-tab switcher, too bad it'll randomly stop working correctly (#gnome-shell/6553). At least, I don't have to restart the shell anymore every other day due to GC issues.

i play tons of games (native and through proton) on wayland without any problems, even steam deck uses wayland.
so i can understand other reasons to still use X, but about gaming, there aren't reasons, wayland is fully working

I don't play tons of games but at least Source games and some other games, I've tested, don't have good performance at all on Wayland. Now, I don't know what Valve does with Gamescope but some games like CS: GO are borderline unplayable with Mutter, less so with KWin but still much much worse than on X.
