Gecko, Blink, Webkit, Servo, Goanna, even Netsurf and Ladybird are all FOSS.

i've heard of it, but isn't flow engine completely proprietary? I can see that being a large deal breaker for a lot of people.

I thought Servo was not needed anymore as all the good parts have been implemented into Gecko. At least that's what Mozilla people said.

Mozilla integrated the Stylo parallelized CSS parser and style manager, and the WebRender 2D rendering engine, both written in Rust, from Servo into Gecko, Firefox's browser engine.

There are a ton of other pieces to a browser: networking, history, bookmarks, location bar, cookie management, tab handling, plug-ins, etc. I don't know if Servo's implementation of those things had any particular advances over Firefox. In general, Rust allows better and more reliable parallel and asynchronous operation.

lots of people wanted servo, as it could be used from the ground up for something new, new the frankenstien that is gecko. but a real modular webrowser that's minimal and easy to embed is in high demand.

Damn, I thought it was dead after Mozilla laid off all those engineers. Or at least, in the same state of GNU Hurd is in right now.
