I'd love to see Krita getting developed into a full-blown Photoshop alternative, as it totally nails the UI and basic workflow. IMO it has the potential of becoming a much better tool than GIMP in this regard. Is there anything planned or thought of in this regard or do the devs want to maintain Krita strictly as a drawing/art creation tool in the mid to long-term future?

Since 2009, they removed all image manipulation features, because developers decided to change Krita direction to be a painting only application, or as they claims "aims to make Krita the best painting application for cartoonists, illustrators, and concept artists.". Krita devs have stated in the past they aren't interested in adding back image manipulation features to Krita (a la Photoshop or Gimp), so you are out of luck. They did add G'mic support tho, and it can be configured inside Krita since Version 5.0.0, but AFAIK, that's all what developers intend to do with image manipulation features.

Someone could fork Krita and re-implement those features.

Right. But is still not just copy/paste GIMP code onto Krita. (Not counting GTK to QT internal porting). Also image manipulation math is all but trivial (Øyvind Kolås has passed the last 15-20 years doing the heavy lifting work for GIMP), maybe some guy with the time, money and nerves to port Øyvind Kolås work to Krita can help, but i doubt that such work can be done in the short or medium term.) . YMMV

Better to be a master of one thing than mediocre at ten things. I think it was a good call.

For that they need either more funding or more contributors, preferably both.

That isn't exactly true though. Since they rewrote the code, they prioritized their main base which is artists. That doesn't mean that image manipulation features are not being added, they are just lower priority for the devs. But they welcome all features from contributors.

PS GMIC was there since Krita 4, only difference with Krita 5 is that it is built in, instead of needing to download a plugin.

No need to fork, one can simply contribute those features and the devs will gladly accept it.
