Phoronix: GNOME Dynamic Triple Buffering Can 2x The Desktop Performance For Intel Graphics, Raspberry Pi

For a while now Daniel Van Vugt of Canonical has been working on GNOME triple buffering support that would be dynamically enabled when the GPU rendering performance is falling behind. It's looking like that dynamic triple buffering may be close to mainlining and is leading big speed-ups for Intel graphics and the Raspberry Pi Broadcom graphics too while the other drivers ultimately should benefit too if falling behind in their desktop rendering performance...

Finally... How does Plasma do this? On my old X200s, Plasma is super smooth while gnome stutters a lot. I hope this development fixes this.

Window manager only club doesn't need GPU acceleration of their desktop. Seriously a good tiling WM like Xmonad or DWM or a good floating WM like Fluxbox is all most people need. At worst run XFCE4. We don't need no stinking GPUs to run a basic desktop Gnome!

Optimize rendering or make it even heavier for clocks to ramp up? I didn't expect anything else from GNOME.

A more power consuming option, is nothing I want to enable. Will it be possible to disable it?!

KWin/Plasma has been using dynamic triple buffering for quite some time. Does help to hide the lack of smooth at cost of slightly more power usage.

Mate's Marco window manager has also been excellent in the last few releases. They came up with a brilliant software accelerated Vsync solution, so my desktop doesn't have those fancy animations, but it's tear free and butter smooth. The only downside of this solution is that it doesn't work with Nvidia because it relies on dri.

I really hope this makes it into Fedora 36!

                  if you are on ubuntu:

                  sudo apt-get purge gnome

I'm not sure if it uses that much more power.
