I can’t imagine how much work it would have been to update such a big project to python 3. I hope to try it out soon!

Updating Kodi to Python3 was relatively simple. It's updating all the Python-based add-ons that takes effort .. many are done, many more to go!

That’s mostly what I was thinking of in terms of effort. Dependencies get updated, functions are depreciated or no longer working, plugins merged, etc

What about Windows 7 and Linux ?
What's so hard for them to just send the HDR metadata to the monitor or TV like MadVR does ?
Kodi is disappointing as always on the video playback side!

HDR playback in Wayland is not complete, barely started. Supposedly kodi-standalone is HDR playback capable, but that sounds like a hack.

Sending the metadata and tripping HDR mode on the TV is simple. Kodi is mostly complete in its capabilities, but having the underlying display pipeline(s) correctly display 8/10/12 bit media with all the numerous colour space options and handing HDR>SDR conversions over multiple different OS platforms, SoC targets, Windowing systems, etc.; requires considerably more effort and complexity than people realise, and in many places the plumbing underneath Kodi is not complete - so developers need to add support in Linux, ffmpeg, Wayland .. and then (only then) does Kodi output what people expect.

Win7 was a candidate for being dropped (it is EOL now) so no effort being made to support HDR on it. I wouldn't expect to see Win7 supported in K20.
