GTK 3 suits GIMP very nicely.

The way I heard it explained the jump from GTK3 to GTK4 is much less a jump than to GTK3 because all the legacy when GIMP had its old toolkit built in.
Time to cut the fat. I hope to see more more a Client + Server / Client + Lib relationship with the Interface and GEGL/Engine being as separate and simple as possible. Cut that fat out. The GTK3 is BEAUTIFUL compared to v2.
