The lack of a more modern icons only task manager option is my biggest gripe. DockBarX and its Xfce panel plugin seem to be effectively abandoned after the switch to GTK3. I really dislike separate icons that only serve as launchers with no window management capabilities.

Xfce is probably the closest thing to a universally well supported DE across distributions. Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, openSUSE, Manjaro, MX, Void, Debian, etc. all support it well.
