          The open-source drivers are well-optimized already, and while there is more room for optimization, GNOME traditionally has been slow and a resource hog (but this has been changing lately).

          I'm not. Believe it or not, I'm just a happy gnome user. I like it. I don't have tons of extensions installed (albeit there are 3 I really find useful) and I do even dare to use Wayland to good success. I just can't stand the annoying trolling of the KDE/X.org Trolls. As far as I'm concerned: you're one of those, any you're part of the fun (read 'ruining of every discussion').
