At the start of 2020 well known KDE developer Nate Graham who publishes the weekly status reports on their desktop environment posted a 2020 KDE roadmap of sorts. A lot of improvements this year (although in the Phoronix headlines only negative stuff is seen about it, as usual in Phoronix when talking about KDE or Qt or anything related to it, following its "strong support for GNOME").

If Phoronix only put KDE in negative light, they wouldn't even bother with sharing the weekly progress reports from Nate which are full of nice things. I don't know if there is similar for Gnome by anyone, but I would have thought to see Gnome fans shaming Phoronix for bias to KDE if there is an equivalent Gnome weekly blog.

Headlines are just that, they're meant to stir up interest to read the article.

There's nothing wrong with GNOME (or that is what the devs say). Pick a better desktop environment if you got problems.

Plasma Wayland is actually starting to become pretty solid. I'm betting by the time 5.20 rolls around most people wont have much trouble with it unless they are using a Nvidia card.

Another thing to note is that the plasma mobile team is working on getting partial screen rendering updates into kwin (to boost performance/efficiency on mobile GPUs), alternative keyboard support protocol so that plasma mobile can use ubuntu touch's maliit keyboard (though it's not limited to just maliit), and wayland thumbnail support.

Yet Ubuntu went for Xorg. Despite using a better compositor. How could it possibly be?
